From Bondi to Northampton: Why We Must Stand Against Antisemitism

The news coming out of Bondi Beach this week has been nothing short of heartbreaking.

While Australia might feel like a world away from us here in

Northamptonshire, the shockwaves of the shooting are being felt globally. When an act of violence is driven by hatred—specifically antisemitism—it does not just attack individuals; it attacks the very fabric of our shared humanity.

At Change For Youth, our mission has always been to fight violence and build safer communities for young people. We cannot do that without addressing the root causes of hate.

Why Antisemitism Impacts Everyone

It is easy to think that if you aren’t Jewish, antisemitism is not "your problem." But history and experience tell us otherwise.

Hate is a virus. When we allow hatred against Jewish people to fester, we lower the bar for what is acceptable in our society. Antisemitism thrives on conspiracy theories, division, and the dehumanization of "the other." When these toxic ideas take root, they rarely stop at one group. They erode trust, increase anxiety in our schools and neighbourhoods, and eventually threaten the safety of all minority communities.

A society that is unsafe for Jewish people is eventually unsafe for everyone.

Bringing it Home: Our Role in Northampton

Northampton has a rich, diverse history, and our Jewish community has been a vital part of this town for centuries. In the wake of the Bondi tragedy, many of our Jewish neighbours may be feeling vulnerable, frightened, and isolated.

As a community focused on youth and social impact, we have a responsibility to step up. We must teach our young people that violence is never the answer and that diversity is our strength

What You Can Do to Support Jewish Communities Here

If you are feeling helpless watching the news, here are four practical things you can do right now in Northampton:

1. Check In on Your Friends and Neighbours

A simple message can mean the world. If you have Jewish friends, colleagues, or neighbours, reach out. You don’t need to have the perfect words. Just saying, "I saw the news, I’m thinking of you, and I stand with you," breaks the isolation that hate crimes try to create.

2. Educate and Challenge

Violence often starts with words. If you hear antisemitic tropes, jokes, or conspiracy theories—whether in the school playground, the pub, or online—challenge them.

  • For Youth Education: We recommend resources from the Holocaust Educational Trust, which offers incredible educational programs.

  • For Navigating Difficult Conversations: Solutions Not Sides provides excellent tools for young people to discuss conflict without resorting to hate or division.

3. Support the Local Community

Our local synagogue is a hub for the community. You can find out more about the Northampton Hebrew Congregation on their website.

  • Safety Advice: For specific advice on Jewish community safety, the Community Security Trust (CST) is the leading UK organization protecting British Jews from antisemitism and related threats.

4. Report Hate Crime

If you see it, report it. By reporting, we tell the perpetrators that there is no home for hate in our county.

  • Local Police: You can report hate crime directly to Northamptonshire Police.

  • Anonymous Reporting: If you prefer to remain anonymous, or if you want to report online without speaking to the police immediately, use True Vision or Crimestoppers.

I have elected not to include an image in this post unlike my usual blog updates out of respect to the victims of this tragedy.

The tragedy at Bondi Beach is a stark reminder that the world needs community groups to educate everyone and build a more inclusive society.

We must continue to build a Northamptonshire where every young person—regardless of their faith or background—can walk down the street without fear.

This GoFundMe has been created to support the victims, survivors, and families impacted by the tragedy. Funds raised will help cover immediate and ongoing needs including medical expenses, rehabilitation, funeral costs, trauma counselling, and essential living support for those whose lives have been suddenly and profoundly affected. Every donation, no matter the size, will help ease the burden on families during an unimaginably difficult time. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing this page to help spread support and solidarity.
